The EASY Newborn Routine: A Guide to Nurturing Your Baby and Yourself

I feel very strongly about the importance of establishing healthy sleep habits for babies and supporting parents in their journey towards better sleep. One of the key routines I advocate for is the “EASY” newborn routine, which stands for Eat, Activity, Sleep, and You time. In this blog, we’ll delve into the significance of each component and how implementing this routine can benefit both newborns and parents alike.

 

  1. Eat: The Eat step of the EASY routine emphasizes the importance of feeding your newborn. For breastfeeding mothers, this could mean nursing your baby, while for formula-feeding parents, it involves preparing and feeding your baby a bottle. I emphasize that this step is part of the Activity phase as well, promoting engagement and interaction during feeding times.

 

  1. Activity: Following feeding, the Activity step encourages parents to engage their newborns in stimulating activities. This could include: singing songs, talking, or engaging in gentle play. This step is crucial for bonding and development, helping babies learn and explore their surroundings.  Don’t stress about having new and interesting things to do with your baby at this age.  What your baby enjoys the most is face to face time with you.  Keep it simple and have fun.

 

  1. Sleep: The Sleep step recognizes the essential role of quality sleep in a newborn’s development. Newborn babies need a lot of sleep.  You may feel like your baby is sleeping, eating, and pooping all day.  That is what a newborn day looks like.  Be sure to follow suggested wake windows as newborn babies cannot tolerate more than 45-60 minutes of awake time.  Remember that you want to lay your baby down at the end of the wake window.  So if your baby is following a 60 minute wake routine it is a good idea to start the nap time routine at then 45 minute mark, laying baby into the bassinet at the 60 minute mark. 

 

At this stage your baby needs you to help them fall asleep.  Go ahead and rock, walk, or even wear your baby until they fall asleep or while they nap. 

 

  1. You time: Perhaps one of the most overlooked yet crucial aspects of parenting is self-care, especially for new moms. The You time step encourages parents, particularly mothers, to prioritize self-care throughout the day. Taking short breaks for relaxation, self-care activities, or even a quick nap can significantly impact a mother’s well-being and, subsequently, her ability to care for her family.

 

Repeating the Routine:  You will cycle through the EASY routine multiple times during the day. Newborns have short wake windows, and establishing a consistent routine helps them feel secure and aids in better sleep. This repetition also allows parents to plan their day effectively, balancing their baby’s needs with their own.

 

This routine is very beneficial for babies when followed consistently.   The EASY routine promotes healthy sleep patterns, aids in digestion, supports cognitive and physical development, and strengthens the parent-child bond through structured interactions.

 

It is also beneficial for parents!   Prioritizing self-care through the You time step not only benefits mothers’ physical and mental well-being but also enhances their ability to care for their newborns effectively. A well-rested and rejuvenated parent can provide better support and nurturing to their baby, creating a positive cycle of care and well-being within the family.

 

In conclusion, the EASY newborn routine encapsulates essential elements for nurturing both babies and parents. By prioritizing feeding, engagement, sleep, and self-care, families can establish healthy habits, promote development, and foster a supportive environment for everyone to thrive.
